　 Althoughtherearenosimplesolutions,recentevidencesuggestswearemovingintherightdirection.Accordingtothelatestdata,violentcrimebyyoungpeoplehasbeencutnearlyinhalfsince1993;schoolyarddeathshavedroppeddramatically.Thesearebothimportantdeclinesthatreflectthelowestnationalcrimeratein25years.

　 Weestablishedafter-schoolandsummerschoolprogramsthatarehelpingnow1.3millionchildrenayearstayoutoftroubleandsucceedintheclassroom,andwe''''velaunchedanationalprogramtofosterlocalpartnershipsthatmakeourschoolssafer,identifychildrenatrisk,andgetthemthehelptheyneed.

　 Workingcloselywiththeprivatesectorandcommunitygroups,wealsoexpandedtheGEAR-UPinitiativetogiveyoungpeoplementorsandencouragementtoseekacollegeeducation.Andnow,arecordnumberofyoungpeoplearegoingontocollege.

　 Weneedtobuildonthisremarkablesuccess.HereinWashington,Congressshouldnowmoveswiftlytoclosethegunshowloopholeandrequirebackgroundchecksforallgunbuyers.Intheprivatesector,HollywoodshouldownuptoitsresponsibilitiesandstopmarketingviolencetoAmerica''''syoungpeople.
